On June 13th, We Rock the Spectrum – Moorabbin, the first NDIS Registered Sensory Play gym for kids of all abilities in the Southern Metropolitan Region of Melbourne, opened its doors to the Moorabbin community, offering private sessions, low capacity open play sessions and respite!
Local mums Lisa Thomasson and Rebecca Mercuri are the new owners of We Rock the Spectrum – Moorabbin. Lisa is a nurse and a mum to three children and two stepchildren. Rebecca is mum to two children and works as a teacher. Since their children’s diagnosis, both have been a proactive member of the special needs community and advocate for inclusion. A chance meeting at their childcare drop off a decade ago brought these two mums together, when they realized they were on similar journeys with their children. After struggling for so many years to find inclusive and sensory-safe social and play opportunities for their own families, Rebecca and Lisa are excited to join forces and open a place where children of all abilities can come to play and benefit developmentally and socially.
Throughout the day, NDIS participating families had the chance to enjoy the sensory facility and all its equipment in alternating sessions. From the swings to the climbing structure, children were given the space to run, jump, climb, slide, swing, rest, and have fun.
To ensure the safety of their We Rockers, the Moorabbin staff took extra safety measures in accordance with strict COVID-19 practices at their gym. The gym was fully sanitised between each session, and everyone entering the facility was screened for COVID-19 risks and encouraged to practice social distancing. In accordance with guidelines set forth by Australia’s Health Authorities, only staff were required to wear masks and gloves.
We are so grateful to the Moorabbin community for supporting We Rock the Spectrum during this time! We are so excited to see what Lisa and Rebecca have in store for We Rock the Spectrum – Moorabbin as restrictions ease.
